Coral Reef, The Treasure Of Our Nation

Large areas of this country is the sea, so that Indonesian society is naturally maritime nation. Moreover, the strategic position of Indonesia, located in tropical areas. A vast expanse of ocean is the potential to develop marine resources which has an abundant diversity, both biological and other resources. One of these potential or biological resources are invaluable in terms of economic or ecological, namely coral reefs. Coral reef is a natural fortress guarding the coast and coastal communities from wave and storm erosion and protect the harbor from fast waves. In addition, more than 2000 species of plants and lay eggs, growing, foraging, and refuge in the surrounding coral reefs.
Some studies mention of a healthy km2 of coral reefs can produce around 30 tonnes of fish per year. Marine reef dwellers can be processed into a cure for skin cancer, rumors, and leukemia. Moreover, it can also function as a place to lay eggs at a time foraging for fish, coral reefs on one side gives its own economic value for coastal communities, especially fishermen. Damage to coral reefs will have an impact on the welfare side mereka.Di as fisheries resources, coral reefs provide income for the world including ornamental fish industry, as well as sources of foreign exchange, including local tourism and marine tourism entrepreneurs.
Indonesia existence as one believed to hold the center of coral reef degradation. Surely the problem, will widen if not immediately taken steps to preserve it. As one of the world's largest archipelagic nation, Indonesia is also known as one of the world's living marine keanekaanragama center with a wealth of coral reefs. Indonesia had the largest area of coral reefs around the world. Indonesia has a coastline of about 2.915 million which inhabit the reef area is almost 51 020 m2. In Equatorial regions that have a very large diversity of corals, Indonesia has 17% of diversity in the world. Almost all species of coral reefs in the world are in Indonesia. But unfortunately, now Indonesia instead of wealth threatened coral reefs damaged by a variety of ways, one of them is due to climate change. Dependence will lead to the sun can only live coral reef in the area that still gets sunlight intensity throughout the year so that generally inhabit the coastal waters at depths of 0 to 90 m.

It was also confirmed by some studies, the condition of Indonesian coral reefs have suffered appalling damage. Research results Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) nationally, the total area estimated at 85 700 km2, only 6% are in good condition. A total of 31.5 in moderate and 40 conditions. severely damaged. Similarly, Ove Hoegh-gueldberg research published in the December 2007 edition of the journal Science, predicted global warming in 2050 will mendegradasikan 98% and 50% of coral reef marine life.
Damage to coral reefs have a direct impact on ecosystems. Fish will vanish because there is no food source. Leatherback turtles foraging in the surrounding rock will move to another place. Sea into the pond to die, which did not provide economic value. It is not surprising if this continues to happen, the welfare of fishing communities that are directly in contact with the sea will be reduced further. Fish catches will be increasingly rare, damage to coral reefs even worse.
This is a tough task that must be borne by the younger generation. At today's young children's attention is only focused on economic development with an orientation to the physical. They seemed to ignore the problems of nature as a legacy from previous  grandmother they are supposed to be their duty to the children and grandchildren will inherit. Whereas the younger generation plays an important role in changing the behavior and style think. They can become victims, while rescue of environmental disasters in the future. In the hands of their creative, ideas and actions of the changes can be pushed to reach out to support more people who care about the preservation of Indonesia. They have the power to bring other people together to safeguard and conserve nature, especially coral reefs.
To save the coral reefs in Indonesia, the young generation should get out of hand in disseminating the importance of the role of coral reefs to the public. Until finally emerged from the awareness of all parties to help preserve coral reefs. Fishing activities which are damaging to the ecosystem of coral reefs will disappear by itself, such as the use of bombs, cyanide poison, and the mining of coral for building materials. The key, a strong willingness from all parties, to realize their love to the surrounding environment. The government also must socialize to the public. If our natural wealth is damaged, what can we inherit the future for our grandchildren?
